SEO the most important service of the lot that a web design company can offer you. Yet it is the one that is most often neglected by website design companies but not by us. Having a great website is just a small part of getting onto the web having a great website that people can actually the main part of getting on to the web. It is very easy to build a site and present it to a customer, take their money and run. That is not what we are about we strive to give our customers the best exposure that they can get on the internet.
There are many things that will impact on a websites popularity or ranking the biggest one is content, readable text content and lots of it. One or two page sites having little chance of appearing high up in the searches as they do not contain what the search engines are looking for. The World Wide Web was once called the Information Highway and was designed to share information not to sell unwanted items or services and this basic principle still applies today. Nobody expects to hit the net with a site as big and as informative as Wikipedia though your aim should be to give as much information to your visitors as you can on a single subject and then as time goes by add and add again to your site. Slowly but surely you site will climb the rankings.
Let’s say that you are a roofer and you want to cash in on the power of the web when it comes to its advertising power, you’d think it would be simple, just build a website and away we go. Jobs will begin to pour in almost instantly. Sorry to burst the bubble but that is not going to happen. And let’s look at why this is the case.
Firstly there are thousands of roofers out there in the UK alone let alone the world so you will be joining the many and not he few.
Some will have invested heavily into the websites others will have fallen into the, I’ve got a site and that will do, trap but they are all none the less still on the web
Next you will struggle with content; it’s amazing how blank the mind can go when forced to think about a subject.
The list goes on. So what can be done about it?
The first thing to do is consider your domain name and does it have to be your business name as well? We were once asked to build a website for “Henry Cooper Property Care” which as you can see would have been a SEO nightmare, climbing the ranks is hard enough but climbing when you have such a famous name as “Henry Cooper” is almost impossible. “Property” means thousands of estate agents above you and “Care” well that brings up thousands upon thousands of sites.
Your domain does play a part in your sites search ranking. We once built a website for a local pub that happened to do bed and breakfast and it was that side of the trade that they wanted building up. So rather than use the establishments name as the domain name we went for bedandbreakfastinwellingtonsomerset as the domain name. Why? Well we figured this would be the closest to what anyone looking for a B&B in wellington Somerset would enter as a search term. People might have entered B&B instead of bedandbreakfast but you cannot have “&” as a part of a domain name. And we had to add Somerset because results would come up for the New Zealand capital first if it was just “Wellington” plus there are two towns called “Wellington” in England. The website was separate to the pubs main business and the domain name need not be displayed anywhere on the premises or such things as a company van. Within in weeks the phone was ringing off the hook and it appeared on the first page of Google above rivals that had been on the web for years.
So now we look at content and go back to our roofer, “Hi, I’m Rodney the roofer and I do very good roof jobs” is not much information for the web user and the website may as well not have been built as it will go nowhere. We always recommend to our customers that they sit down and think about what their potential visitors would enter into a search engine whilst they were looking for their goods or services and then start writing their page’s content to include such search terms. Starting small a targeting certain aspects first. So with our roofer we would encourage that he concentrates on his immediate catchment or work area. So his home town, nearby towns and villages and or cities and of course his country and county get those words in first. Next focus on a main line of his work, in his case it could be flat roofs so his content should be flat roof related and rich.
Over time he should add more areas and include details including photo’s of flat roof jobs that he has done, before, during and after are always the best, and not stock photos. Slowly but surely he should add more aspects of his work to the site and link them to the locations where the work was carried out. So slating or tiling sections can be added. The site will grow as will the information on it and the robots will love visiting his site.
Of course there are many other tricks and tips and absolute musts that need to be done to properly SEO a site some technical others not so, some for us to do and some for you to do but together we will work with one single aim and that is to get you to the best possible position you can be when it comes to search returns.
Just one other thing, links are important as is ease of use of your website. Back-links are essential from websites of similar content but are rarely understood. we once asked another site also offering SEO services if they would be interested in having reciprocal links only to receive this reply “I do not link with any site that offers the same service as I do” so much for their SEO services. In another case we built a website for a window cleaner based in London and informed him that we would do our best to obtain reciprocal links to other window cleaner’s sites. He was horrified a refused to let us do it even though we had pointed out that having a link with a window cleaner based in Aberdeen’s website would have no impact on his business whatsoever.
